NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) is a naturally occurring form of Vitamin B3 that functions as a highly efficient precursor to NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide). Like its close cousin NMN, NR is used to restore cellular NAD+ levels, which naturally decline by up to 50% as we age. NAD+ is essential for mitochondrial energy production and the activation of sirtuins (the "longevity genes").[1]

In the biohacking and longevity communities, NR is one of the most widely used and clinically studied anti-aging supplements. It gained massive popularity after being commercialized under the patented name Niagen®. Cycle Length & Discontinuation Protocol

  • Cycle Length: NR is typically taken continuously. There is no need to cycle off, as the goal is to maintain chronically elevated NAD+ levels to combat aging.
  • Timing: It is highly recommended to take NR in the morning. NAD+ levels naturally peak in the morning as part of the circadian rhythm. Taking NR late in the day can disrupt sleep.

Contraindications

Q: Is NR better than NMN? A: Both are highly effective at raising NAD+. NR has more human clinical data and is fully FDA-approved as a dietary supplement. NMN is currently more popular in the biohacking community, but the physiological end result (higher NAD+) is very similar.

Q: Why do I need to take TMG with NR? A: When NAD+ is used by the cell, it breaks down into Nicotinamide (NAM). To excrete excess NAM, the body attaches a "methyl group" to it. If you take high doses of NR, you use up your body's methyl groups to clear the waste. TMG (Trimethylglycine) provides extra methyl groups to prevent depletion, which causes fatigue.

Q: Will NR make me live longer? A: While it extends lifespan in mice and yeast, human lifespan studies take decades to complete. What NR does do in humans is improve "healthspan"—the period of life spent in good health, free from chronic diseases of aging.
